Bubonic plague is caused by a bacteria, Yersinia pestis. The Black Death refers to a specific outbreak of bubonic plague in the 1340s in Europe. The other two general plague forms are septicemic (the bacterium has infected your lymph nodes) and pneumonic (the bacterium has infected your lungs).
